Context. Context. Context. That’s said not only for emphasis but because it’s dangerous to read only one bible passage and then close the book and go on using that bible verse like an Oprah quote on a Starbucks coffee cup. Someone even wrote a little booklet called “Never Read a Bible Verse”. In other words, don’t just read one; read more; read several. Take a moment or two to study the verses before and after. Look at the chapter and that . . . Read All

The Purpose of Scripture
We believe that all Scripture bears witness to Jesus Christ and that its primary purpose is to make men wise unto salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. We therefore affirm that the Scriptures are rightly used only when they are read from the perspective of justification by faith and the proper distinction between Law and Gospel.
Since the saving work of Jesus Christ was accomplished through His personal entrance into our history and His genuinely historical life, death and resurrection, we acknowledge that the recognition of the soteriological purpose of Scripture in no sense permits . . . Read All
In Designing New Technology U.S. Military Looks to Birds
Evolution over millions of years credited for the birds’ internal compasses.DARPA (The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) thinks that if it can discover exactly how birds migrate, it can use the knowledge to develop new sensor technology for the military.DARPA’s QuBE (Quantum Effects in Biological Environment) program first did a study on how electromagnetic noises produced by electronics such as cellphones, televisions and radios could be interfering with the biological compasses of migratory birds. Scientists know that birds which migrate at night have an internal magnetic compass that guides them during the spring and fall migration seasons. The question has been whether or not artificial electrical and magnetic fields created by electronic devices could be affecting the . . . Read All

No Apologies.
It was bound to happen. Someone changes the subject. People unfriend me on Facebook because of my overly churchy posts. Family members avoid my religious conversations. Even I fall into the trap of continually avoiding religious topics that may rub people the wrong way. It’s easy to confess my faith on Sunday morning but not in my everyday life. The world has me convinced that proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ is only allowed in certain situations. My comfort level may be compromised if I attempt to talk to someone about Jesus Christ. They may have questions I can’t answer off the top of my head. It’s easier to keep the Gospel of Jesus Christ to myself. I can almost . . . Read All

Bigger Inside than Out
. . . Read All
G. K. Chesterton is said to have remarked once that the Church is bigger on the inside than it appears from the outside. Saints come in all kinds and sizes and from all manner of origins to become the baptized people of God. On the outside the Church appears monolithic, homogenized, and narrow. From the inside, we see the marvel of many members (organs) of the body, so very different and yet functioning together as one by God’s grace and design.
The critics see “the Church” as one voice, very often a hard, uncaring, judgmental, dogmatic, and aloof voice. That once voice is, in reality, many voices speaking and singing and acting together (like the voices that become one in
Pope calls for redistribution of wealth
The Pope called on the United Nations to mobilize governments to help the poor through the redistribution of wealth. This suggests a conundrum: Catholic conservatives are the most likely to believe in papal authority, and yet what happens when the papal authority teaches against conservative principles, such as the virtues of the free market? I’d [Read More…]

Maximum wage
Journalist Michael J. Totten visits Havana to see how things are going in still-Communist Cuba: In the United States, we have a minimum wage; Cuba has a maximum wage—$20 a month for almost every job in the country.
