Scientists believe the quake did not release all the ground’s energy, and more earthquakes are predicted. Radar from Europe’s Sentinel-1A satellite has revealed the reason why Kathmandu, Nepal suffered so much damage from the recent magnitude-7.8 earthquake. Sentinel data shows a large area just outside the city lifted vertically by about 3 feet or 1 meter. The region, which appears to be about 75 miles (120 km) long by 30 miles (50 km) wide, reached as close to Kathmandu as 10 miles. “That’s one of the reasons why Kathmandu has so much damage,” said Tim Wright, a geophysicist at the U. of Leeds in the UK., even though the city is relatively far from the quake epicenter.While the quake . . .
