Everlasting Extras – Righteousified!!
You can’t pit Paul against Jesus against Peter against Matthew. And yet if you try to say that we work to make ourselves righteous, that’s what you have to do. Why I Quit the Gideons
When I was a little kid, I found the pocket-sized New Testament that my father received from a Gideon when he was drafted. I used to carry this King James New Testament around with me and read it constantly, even though I found the language to be awkward and had difficulty understanding a lot of it. That was the first Bible that was really “mine.” I had other Bibles, but they sat on the shelf. This pocket New Testament went with me everywhere. It fascinated me that I was reading that particular New Testament because a Gideon gave it to my father in 1965.
My next encounter with the Gideons was when I was in college at Murray State University. . . . Read All
The Intolerance of the “Tolerant”
Christians are often accused of hypocrisy and intolerance. As sinners, we routinely fail to practice what we preach. However, hypocrisy is not synonymous with moral failure, Merriam-Webster notwithstanding. Hypocrisy is claiming to hold beliefs that you don’t actually hold. Samuel Johnson was right:
“Nothing is more unjust, however common, than to charge with hypocrisy him that expresses zeal for those virtues which he neglects to practice; since he may be sincerely convinced of the advantages of conquering his passions, without having yet obtained the victory, as a man may be confident of the advantages of a voyage, or a journey, without having courage or industry to undertake it, and may honestly recommend to others, those attempts which he neglects himself.”

False Christs and Wrong Answers: A Sermon for the Confession of St. Peter on St. Mark 8:27-35
From the very beginning of St. Mark’s Gospel, things hadn’t been going particularly well for our Lord. In chapter 1 He’s tempted by Satan, opposed by demons, and disobeyed by even those He had healed. In chapter 2, the scribes regard Jesus as a blasphemer, and in chapter 3 the Pharisees and Herodians are already plotting how to destroy Him, and—for good measure—accuse Him of being in league with Satan. At the same time, so many people are following Jesus, He couldn’t go anywhere in public (1:45). Needless to say, it hasn’t been an easy road for our Lord, and things will only get worse.
Naturally, when someone makes the sort of claims Jesus does, we want proof. So here . . . Read All

Martin Luther on Forgiveness of Sin and Extra Nos Righteousness
It’s a simple thing to mouth the expression “forgiveness of sins” just as it is a simple thing to repeat the basic truths of Christian doctrine. Ah, yes, if all we had to do was to mouth the words! The problem is that when it comes to putting that expression into practice, we don’t know the first thing about it! You see, it is such a tremendous truth, a truth that I am to believe wholeheartedly, that all my sins are forgiven, and that by faith I am righteous before God. Oh, what a marvelously astounding righteousness this is! How totally different this is in contrast to the righteousness of this world as proclaimed by all its lawyers, intellectual giants, . . . Righteous Pious Sows and Asses
The Formula of Concord has some portions that make it sound like we can look at our good works as evidence of our salvation, as in, we can find comfort in our good works because they are evidence of our justification. But is that what is really going on? Are we really supposed to find […] ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
